The problem
Duration: Sept-Dec 2027. Working arrangement: In person. Expected commitment: Min 5 hrs/week. Key responsibilities: Support the development and scale-up of Hyphn's mycelium material production process. Conduct growth experiments, optimise substrate formulations and processing conditions, improve consistency between batches, develop repeatable production procedures, and support the design of a scalable manufacturing workflow from substrate preparation through growing, moulding, drying and finishing. Challenge — Mycelium Process Engineering Intern: Scale a Lab-Grown Material into a Repeatable Production Process: Hyphn develops sustainable products using mycelium-based materials. One of our key engineering challenges is moving from small experimental batches toward a production process that is faster, more consistent and scalable. You will investigate how factors such as substrate composition, inoculation, moisture, temperature, humidity, mould geometry, growth time and drying conditions affect material growth and quality. Using experiments and process analysis, you will help identify bottlenecks, improve process reliability and propose how the current workflow can be scaled to produce larger quantities without compromising product quality. Helpful resources: Existing Hyphn growth procedures and experimental data, substrate and mycelium samples, moulds and prototype products, access to the team's existing R&D framework, and guidance from the Hyphn team and research collaborators. Note: This is a hands-on engineering and R&D role. Students should be comfortable running experiments, recording data and iterating when results are inconsistent. Experience in chemical engineering, bioengineering, materials science, biotechnology, mechanical engineering or related fields would be useful, but prior experience with mycelium is not required. The work may involve biological materials, laboratory equipment and prototype manufacturing processes.
What you produce
1. Experimental study and results identifying key parameters affecting mycelium growth and material quality. 2. Recommended operating conditions and improved growth protocol/SOP. 3. Process flow and proposed scale-up workflow for higher-volume production. 4. Final presentation/report summarising findings, experiments and recommendations.
